In 19th April 1948, ESI Act 1948 was passed to ensure that workers get benefits in conditions such as employment injury, sickness, maternity, and in certain other conditions.
The act was initially applied to these categories of industries
- Any factory that employed 10 or more than persons.
- Factories which didn’t used power and employed 20 or more than workers.
The area wise implementation of the various provision of the act is being done progressively. Appropriate government agencies are authorized to implement and take actions under these policies and extend the provisions to include other industries too. Such industries include
- Agricultural
- Commercial
- Industrial
Following class of establishments have been brought under ESI Act by different State Governments
- Newspaper establishments
- Road Motor Transport Undertakings
- Cinemas, including preview theaters
- Hotels and Restaurants
- Shops
More than two lakh industrial units have been covered by ESI Act across the country.
